I don’t know how you ruin the musical. It’s the easiest musical to make into a movie ever; get a bunch of famous singers and animate cats dancing. It’s not a good show but by adding a plot and ruining the songs they lost everything that made cats popular to begin with.

Gag me, this is awful. In addition to everyone and their grandmother saying that they basically did the worst possible way to animate the characters (you manage to gross out the furries with a bunch of anthro cats! ;3 ), the original story simply does not fit adaptation to film; it’s not about the story, but the spectacle of the dances and choreography.

I saw Cats live and really enjoyed it, but a movie ruins any appeal. The show had impressive live dancing and singing, it was a full performance, and a movie is not.

Speaking as a London native, perhaps I can shed some light on Cats. All musicals by Andrew Lloyd-Weber (Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express) are not really aimed at people who speak English as their first language: they are targeted at the 20 million foreign tourists London receives each year. That is why they're all about spectacle - elaborate costumes, choreography and sets that advertise well to East Asian tourists on billboards and video-screens at airports as the "authentic West End musical" experience; while the lyrics are just a bunch of mindless repetition of simple words that don't really make a lot of sense. (See for instance that Family Guy cutaway gag about Starlight Express. I was unfortunate enough to be dragged to that show by some visiting foreign tourist friends, and sure enough it consists largely of people dressed as trains on roller skates singing the words "Starlight Express" repeatedly. Shakespeare it ain't.)

I watched the musical ~~couldn’t get through it cuz my anxiety did the thing it does~~ and the little I saw made no sense. I think I got to like the introduction of the twins before I started trying to bash my head in, ~~that was not a joke anxiety is one helluva drug, I got kicked out because of that~~ anyway yeah my dad said the jelicle that got s e l e c t e d was sucked up by some UFO lookin thing. Overall I’d give it a **what the fuck** out of 10

Cats is a story of strays and abandoned cats. Victoria the white cat gets abandoned and the jellical cats take her under their....paw. jellical is a play on accents. (Pollical is a play on "poor little"....jellical is a play on "dear little".) Grisabella was outcast with the underlying unspoken assumptions that she's a "street" cat......like a lady of the night. Grisabella had many hard lives and was not only shunned by her human owners but also the jellical cats. Rebel Wilson's cat character was a lazy Gumby pampered house cat. Nothing to do but train the mice and roaches and fall over with false self accomplishment. Total cat behaviour. The heaviside layer is where the choosen cats go to be reborn.... the kennelly-heaviside layer is a layer of ionized gas in the atmosphere. Metaphorical for cat heaven. Pretty interesting
